My correct username is in the login box, I enter my password and continue. So it's not the greatest inconvenience in the world but it is an irritation.
Possible causes are: -The user name or password specified are invalid. -Kerberos is used when no authentication method and no user name are specified. -Kerberos accepts domain user names, but not local user names.
Removing the service account in question allowed them to be authenticated with the Intranet site with their normal Windows domain\username. As @pcalkins suggested, at some point the affected users had used these credentials on their machine, and Chrome, Edge, IE were using that saved credential when authenticating with the Intranet site.

To recap; your password contains special characters. you can connect with the vSphere client when you type in the password. you can not connect to the vCenter with a Connect-VIServer. in the file C:\Logs\VCS.txt you have the password in cleartext.
